Bettering YOUR Game!
Rossco’s Tip of the Week
Goalkeepers learn your trade, the best goalkeepers are not the ones who pull off
the odd miraculous save; the best goalkeepers prevent themselves having to make
those saves. Can you organize the defense in front of you? How is your starting
position, are you ready to come out and take care of long through balls? Go to
all the goalkeeping sessions you can and use the advice you get from all our
coaches to make your job easier.
But, at the end of the day, find a way to keep that ball from hitting the net!
This save by England goalkeeper Gordan Banks is considered by many to be the
best save of all time. What makes it all the sweeter is that it is against
arguably the greatest player that ever lived, Pele.
How about these antics from Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar in the 1984
European Cup Final? The spaghetti legs trick went down in the history books!
Amazingly, Jerzy Dudek used the same trick for Liverpool in the 2005 final,
helping Liverpool capture yet another European trophy.

So what’s Rossco ranting about this week?
PLAY IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS! It gets on my wick when I hear young
players moan about being told to play in certain positions on the field.
Soccer is a team game, and your coach is telling you to play in a
certain position because of the qualities that you can bring to that
role, be a team player and do what is asked. It’s also important that
you understand all the positions on the field; what better way to gain
an understanding than to play that position? Comprehending what other
players are experiencing during a game is very valuable in helping you
to become thoughtful and tactically aware soccer player. You all have
many years ahead of you; you don’t know what position you’re finally
going to end up playing.
When I was a 16-year-old I signed for Kilmarnock F.C as a goal scorer, a
center forward. After my first year, I enjoyed two very successful years
as a defensive center midfielder. At college I played attacking
midfield, and for the Des Moines Menace I have played both defensively
and offensively. Later on in your careers, you’ll be glad of the
experiences you’ve had as a youth, and be able to step into various
roles on the field.
Here is this weeks TV schedule and the one to catch this week is the
London derby between Aresenal and Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams have
made an impressive start to the season and you can expect some quality
soccer from these two teams who like to move the ball around quickly.
Its on ESPN2, so no excuses!

Every week I will provide you with some footage of awesome players and fantastic
goals and soccer skills! Or, like this week, something a little bit different…
As I mentioned earlier, I have played all over the field, but one position I
have never played in a competitive game is goalkeeper. I have the utmost respect
for the job goalkeepers do, and so should all of you outfield players. These
guys and gals go through tough training to hone their ability in the position,
never forget the importance of that goalie behind you. So this week…
goalkeepers, WE SALUTE YOU!
Talk about being able to play in different positions. In this clip, the
goalkeeper gets sent off for the foul on the striker. Watch what happens when an
outfield player takes his gloves and faces the resulting penalty kick!
And for a bit of fun, here’s the goalkeepers getting their own back on all those
strikers they’ve faced! There are goals here by Paraguayan goalkeeper, Josa Luis
Chilavert, who has scored an amazing 62 goals in his career!
