Rossco’s Tip of the Week
Pele is arguably the greatest player of all time and even he is not dictating
what happens next when he has the ball at his feet; watch Carlos Alberto’s run
as he scores this goal for Brazil, he comes from nowhere! Pele just has to play
a simple pass into his path, QUALITY!
Hopefully these videos give you an idea of how you can influence the game, even
when you don’t have the ball at your feet.

So what’s Rossco ranting about this week?
Are you one of those soccer players who stands still with their arm in
the air yelling your teammates name? YOU BETTER NOT BE!
There is nothing more frustrating to watch a team that just stands and
admires a teammate who is in possession of the ball. Who do you think is
in charge of what happens next? A lot of people would say that the
player with the ball dictates EVERYTHING. However, its the players off
the ball that can truly make things happen. Here is a word you’ve heard
before- ANGLES! Creating angles to become a good passing option needs to
become automatic for you soccer players. Think about it, if you are a
defender would you rather an opponent just stands still yelling or is
constantly on the move- I think the answer is pretty obvious. So get
your soccer brain turned on and be a smart player, with the ball and,
perhaps even more importantly, without the ball.
What’s happening at JUSC?
May 7th marked our annual club
night at Johnston High School. Despite the freezing weather, we still had a
fantastic number of players, coaches and families out there! This is a great
indication of the enthusiasm being generated in the Johnston and Urbandale
communities for soccer! The future looks bright!
Also, stay tuned for a special JUSC World Cup Extravaganza! On June 12th we will
celebrate the World Cup in style- play in a 4 v 4 World Cup tournament yourself,
watch your coaches play and enjoy USA v. England on the big screen at Johnston
High School. More info to come!!!
