Bettering YOUR Game!
Rossco’s Tip of the Week

Executing set pieces comes from one thing, PRACTICE. Cristiano Ronaldo has practiced so much that he is the pioneer of a brand new way of taking free kicks- for those of you who are baseball fans… here is the soccer knuckleball. A goalkeepers nightmare, watch it move!

So how on earth does he do it? This tutorial takes you through some of the key elements, and if any of you ladies are doubting that you can get the power that the guys can, check out this girl! Shout out to the u12 Blast girls… this is QUALITY!

So what’s Rossco ranting about this week?

In the week prior to state cup I have decided to rant about an extremely important, but often overlooked part of the game. SET PIECES! A “set piece” in soccer is any situation in which the game is started from a dead ball. And why is this so important? Well try this on for starters- according to Opta stats, 42% of goals in the 2008/2009 English Premier League season were the direct result of set pieces. Teams like Stoke City (Rory Delap anyone?) and Bolton Wanderers survive in the EPL by being specialists in these dead ball situations. Liverpool’s poor season was in part due to their inability to defend set pieces effectively.

If you are interested in further reading on this check out this article:

SO-as an important weekend approaches- listen to your coach, know your role as set pieces and make the most of them. Switching off at a set piece and not defending properly is a horrible way to lose a goal, especially if you have had the better of the game. On the other side of the coin, make the most of offensive set piece opportunities and you could grab that important goal that makes all the difference!

 What’s happening at JUSC?

As the temperatures begin to soar it become hugely important that you are hydrated properly at practice. Be aware that you may need to bring more water than you have been used to at the beginning of the season!

Also this weekend JUSC will be represented in the Iowa State Cup. All the games will take place at Cownie; it would be great to see you out there supporting our teams!

JUSC is proud to have partnered with the Special Olympics! Last week, Shedzy, Ozzie and I had the absolute privilege of helping with the soccer part of the event. All three of us found the experience humbling and very rewarding; we thank them for the opportunity, it was a BLAST! We are looking forward to further opportunities to assist with this fantastic event.

When I think of set pieces I think of this man, Davis Beckham. In this example, watch how David Beckham takes England from a dismal loss to qualification for the World Cup finals with one expert free-kick. Bear in mind, Beckham took the third string goalkeeper out after practice every single day to PRACTICE.

You think that top teams don’t work on set pieces? Case and point right here! You’ve got to love the cheeky penalty at the end!

And yes, they work on corners too…

And sometimes they don’t work out quite as planned! This gets me every time…
