about this week?
This Ranting Scotsman
always has something to say!
What do you do when your team loses the ball?! Soccer is a game full of
transitions and if you transition well from attack to defense and vice
versa, then there is a good chance your team can be successful.
So… are you a player who doesn’t work hard to get back into a defensive
position? Because today I’m ranting about you!! What gives you the right
to let your teammates down?! As soon as you lose the ball you should be
immediately trying to win it back, and if you can’t, you should be
transitioning to provide defensive shape. Walking back won’t cut it
superstar!
What's happening at JUSC, JSC & USC?
We are very excited to once again be holding a USC, JSC and JUSC club
night on the evening of the Johnston vs. Urbandale High
School Varsity girls and boys games, Friday May 6th at JHS
field. Any player wearing club uniform or apparel will
enter the game, free of charge. Please see attached flyer
for more information!!
We will be holding our second annual "Stars of the Future"
parade which was a big hit last year! The parade will take
place between the women's and men's games. The women
kick-off at 5:30pm, with the men's game kicking-off at
7:30pm.
We think this is a great way for the kids to watch a
higher level of soccer, generate more interest in the
sport and to also thank you, as coaches, players and
families for the continued support of our programs. There
will be over 30 JUSC Select players, showcasing their
talent during both games!
I have scoured YouTube for hours to find some good videos to
show defending! Unfortunately, quality defending doesn’t
often make the highlight reel. Your coaches appreciate your
ability to defend, as do your teammates!
Bobby Moore is a legendary England defender, here he is with
some famous tackles on a few of Brazil’s best ever players
including Pele! Notice how he is patient before moving to
win the ball.
Working hard to win the ball back and stop attacks is vital
for any soccer team; Manchester United’s Vidic is a player
from the modern game who is always fully committed.

Rossco’s Tip of the Week
Defensive midfielders are often unsung heroes of great
teams. They’re job in breaking up the play, dictating the
pace of the game and distributing the ball is absolutely
essential to any successful team. Edgar Davids was one of
the best at it, so I’ll let him take it away…
