The age group registration is based on the calendar year.

  • Players born between January 1 and December 31 in a year play on the same team unless a player is “playing up” in an older age group of any given year.
  • This is consistent with the other 208 FIFA countries that register youth players by their year of birth. Read more

  • Requests past registration/same team deadline are less likely to be honored.

Play-Up Request

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY For a proper development and positive experience, our club's objective is to have kids play at their true age group whenever possible.
Play-Up outside playup division (5/6U to 7/8, 7/8 to 9/10, 9/10 to 11/12, 11/12 to 13/14) is not advisable and must be approved by pro coach evaluation to ensure physical readiness for the bigger field, longer games, maturity etc. Note, such requests are cautiously considered for safety and the best developmental environment for all kids.

An example of 8U play-up to 9U

  • Longer game time: From 4x8 minutes at 8U to 2x25 at 9U
  • Much larger field: From 25-35 length to 55-65 yards (this is a most drastic change, combined with the longer game, this is a challenging transition for the true 9U player)
  • At 8U (4v4) with no goalies to 7v7 with goalies at 9U
  • It is possible that 9U team ends up playing against 10U team by Iowa Soccer League rules, hence an 8U player that is playing-up at 9U might face 10U competition)
The example above applies similarly to all “even” to “odd” numbered age group requests, especially for play-up request from 10U to 11U and from 12U to 13U.
  1. In your honest personal opinion, do you still see your child fit to play up?
  2. Does his/her physical and technical ability considerably outgrow his/her teammates?
  3. If requested, could the past coach provide a supporting reference?
After reviewing the above information, if you are still confident this request would benefit your child's playing development, please follow the required process:
Step One: Complete the "true age" registration Step Two: Send us an email acknowledging the facts above and your reasons for play up. (carpooling, neighbors, siblings together, etc., are not a good reason for play up)

Practices

When are the practices?

  • REC Parent Volunteer Coaches determine the practice time and location. They usually check with the parents to find out what works best.
  • You can expect to hear from the coach approximately two weeks prior to the start of games. Please be patient, some volunteers have more time than the others.
  • Be on time for drop off and for pickup.

Where are the practices?

Parent coaches might chose to practice at JUSC fields based on availability at either Johnston or Urbandale Soccer Complex but parent coaches might opt-out to practice at green spaces around the community.

How long are practice sessions?

  • Parent coaches typically schedule 45 minutes to 1hr practice once a week.
  • The older age groups might be practicing longer and multiple times per week.
